Looking for help on next week's column

My column next week is going to be on comics off the beaten path...

Next week, I am planning on a column about really good books that are not typical Marvel/DC superhero fare. It's not going to be a rant so much as a suggestion box.

I would love to put posters' inputs on this. Please suggest any titles you like me to mention with a sentence or so on why you like this book. You can either post them here or e-mail me at jackknight@gmail.com. I will be adding them all in my column next week.

Blackmore out.

I missed the explanation part.

Atomika. It's a really interesting book. It's very strange, but it's also good and engrossing.

How far off the beaten path? Just not mainstream superhero stuff?

I'd suggest Girls, by the Luna Brothers, put out by Image. I could contribute a brief capsule review of the series for your column if that would be helpful.

Or maybe Fell by Warren Ellis . . . although I haven't seen a new issue in a while, is that still coming out?

On-going or any book?

I would suggest Walking Dead and possibly Hellblazer for the former, and stuff like Transmet for the latter.

Maybe you should write a column about some of your favorite finished series some times.

So would Marvel/DC books that aren't standard superhero fare still qualify?

Because everytime I go to my LCS, there's invariably somebody telling me about this great new book being printed. And that's fine. But when I try to return the favor and tell them about a book that's being printed by the Big Two, they get pissy and start calling me a fanboy.

But then maybe that's just where I live, or something. Everybody here reads from the "not Marvel/DC" section. And anytime I wander into it, there's too much elitist bullshit to slog through so I just pick up a random title and wait for somebody to say, "You know, that guy's a sellout. He worked for Marvel."

It kills me.

Anyway, I'm glad you're doing this article. But is it safe to assume that, on one hand, you have people that primarily read about Marvel or DC superheroes and miss out on a large chunk of the medium -- while on the other hand, you have readers that won't dare touch anything considered "mainstream." Which is just as bad. Both are equally closing themselves off to a perfectly readable genre. Or subgenre, as it were.

So if you want to explore comics off the beaten path, then you have to figure out exactly what path the audience is starting off from. Which I guess you did. But what about the people that refuse to read from the mainstream? Don't they have a beaten path? What about manga readers?

I don't know. But then, I guess maybe that's the point of this exercise. Unless you just want to find really obscured titles and tell everybody how great they are on the grounds that they're not X-Men or Superman. And I can go with that too.

Hey anonymous, I know what you mean, you'll always find some comic readers who can pretty disdainful of all the DC/Marvel books, even when they're pretty good.

My first love is the superhero stuff, though, and I'm sure you'll see plenty of articles on mainstream Marvel and DC titles. I'd happily recommend Superman: Red Son and the Captain Britain TPB (my staff picks) to anyone, and if they turn up their nose, then that's their loss!
