The Return of the Knight
This week in comics deals with the return of the two greatest Knights in all of comics. The latest Batman book, Detective Comics, continues Batman’s first adventure in Gotham since his year off. Along with the Batman this week comes the long awaited return of Moon Knight! Let me be the first to say that the issue did not disappoint but more on that later. O and by the way I figured I would also throw in a review of Infinite Crisis 6 too...you know everyone is going to do it.
Leading off will be the RETURN OF MOONKNIGHT! I expected a recap issue for the past of Moon Knight, since almost every first issue follows this pattern. I was right but there was something special about the way this was done, it just felt right the second I first opened the book.
The initial story is Moon Knight talking about how other heroes deal with monsters popping out of the ground or taking on Magneto. Moon Knight talks about how he is a street level fighter, the he gets to the fun stuff. Cue the lovely spread of Moon Knight diving downward from his helicopter.
Now you would think that stopping a few generic thugs in a car would be boring but I enjoy how Moon Knight talks about how much he loves what he does. As the car is stopped and a thug looks to shoot Moon Knight there is really great dialogue that establishes the character. It is simply an anecdote about Hawkeye making fun of Moon Knight for wearing white when he operates at night. Moon Knight says that he wears it so he will be seen, that even the best shot in the world is terrified when they see him.
Moon Knight climbs back into his chopper and flies off into the night with his pilot Frenchie. Moon Knight says that he is grateful to be able to do what he does and then it shows Moon Knight when he is not Moon Knight, when he is Marc Spector, when he is with his Marlene, and when he is happy in his home.
The last shot of the book shows a broken man in a chair taking pain killers; this is what Marc Spector has become, broken. Spector crawls up his statue of Khonshu, spits in its face and then begs to be a hero again.
Basically I loved this issue; it reminds me of Batman and is very dark. It also showed that Spector was happy though; that while he was a complete badass as Moon Knight he still could go home to a loving woman, friends, and fortune. I can not wait for the next issue and if you don't pick this up you are crazy.
Batman Detective Comics 818
This was a pretty decent issue, not a whole lot happened but it moved the story along a bit more. The issue starts at the place where Magpie was murdered; the only thing that matters about this is that a double-barreled pistol was used to kill both Magpie and KGBeast. All signs point to Two-Face but he was supposed to be fixed…and not in the way you are probably thinking.
Anyway this arc is called Face the Face so I am going to guess that Two-Face is a part of Harvey’s psyche now so even though he is physically back to normal he will still act like Two-Face. I came to this conclusion since at one point the issue Harvey looks down and sees Two-Face in the reflection of the water.
Harvey then watches Batman and Robin take down some thugs and he makes a comment that I really like. Basically he says that Batman and Robin move together now, that it will all be different. Dent even suspects the original Robin of training Tim since they are now so much alike.
After the fight Batman tells Tim that he has the potential to be better than Dick was. I have a problem with this because it is not consistent with the most recent issue of Robin. In Robin 148 Batman tells Tim that he could not beat Cassie is a fight but now Tim apparently has potential to be better than Dick. Tim is definitely a better detective than Dick but Dick is far more agile and has been doing acrobatics since he was a kid. I think it was meant that he could be a better Robin than Dick was and that’s how I am going to take it but I think it should have been made clearer since this arc is supposed to be a jump on point for new readers.
After this Batman goes to take care of some business that is revealed in the backup story of the issue. Basically Batman just hires Jason Baro be a detective for him during the day when Batman can not be out in the public. There is a nice little twist in the story but you can see it for yourself, it is not essential for the Face the Face arc.
After Batman leaves Harvey comes in and kills the ventriloquist making three low level rogue deaths, how many more before Batman ends the madness? Guess we have to wait until Batman 652 comes out.
Infinite Crisis 6
Well chances are anyone reading this part will buy Infinite Crisis 6 so I am not going too much into it because you most likely already have it in your hands. Everything you have heard about it is true. Batman finally takes down Brother Eye with his crew of Super Flunkies, The Spectre is reborn and makes quick work of Star Sapphire, and Superboy has a rematch with Superboy prime and gets his ass handed to him. Only one more issue left, who will live? Who will die? What little things will be left out forcing us all to buy 52? We can only wait and see.

I enjoyed Moon Knight and I'm a MK fan from way back - but this book still didn't make my top three comics of the week. Finch's art looked great but there was just something about the sparse dialogue and narration, I didn't think Huston nailed it. However, he's clearly a fan, so I'm sure he'll find the right tone soon. I just hope Finch can keep pace because I can't stand delays, especially on a new book.
